I remember my father telling me that in the 1920s he could buy enough candy for a penny to make himself sick. For a nickel he said he could treat the whole block.
When I was a kid there was a candy/ice cream shop where they had two plates, one filled with Bazooka bubble gum and the other in Mason mints. If your change came to a few pennies you could take it in gum or candy instead.

I wish they had better quality imagine. I can’t make out what nickle machine Mutt is trying to use.

Wouldn’t asking for pennies indicate that it is a penny machine? Maybe gum?

I don’t know. I remember penny machines giving jawbreakers.

The letters on the machine that are in an upward slant say “Gum”.

I could understand Mutt’s impatience if he needed the pennies to see What the Butler Saw.

Wow, I’d like to see someone take a 5 cent check to the bank today. It would cost me $2.00 just to drive there.
