Looks to me like the customer is a blonde. So if anyone could be offended at the portrayal, I would think it would be blondes. But, looks to me like Jeff just did a good deed. He made sure that the customer had a comfortable pair of shoes WITHOUT wounding her dignity! Looks like a win-win situation to me!
What is wrong with some of these people? This is the second strip I’ve come across today where somebody was objecting to something that wasn’t even there.
Interesting. There IS an old fashioned racial caricature in the strip, the kind no one would try to do today, but not everyone can see it. Back then no one saw it. Maybe they should have skipped this one.
That is the way it WAS back then…to change it now would be attempting to change history. Take it for what it WAS. There are always some people who get offended at anything.
In the 3rd panel I see a black head of what looks like a porter. I did not need magnafication to view it.. If I at 87 years of age can view it, you younger folk should likewise be able to see it.

I can’t believe how political incorrect even for that era to picture an African American that way!

African Americans were portrayed like that up into the 1940’s but I haven’t seen a whole lot of it past then. Not in the dailies anyway.

If you look at the way Mutt is portrayed, the black man isn’t charicatured that much differently.

There is a black porter on the right hand side of panel 3 just under Mutt’s elbow. I didn’t even notice him until after I read the comments here.
