Look at the artwork; it’s obvious from that that the original dialog would be illegible. I don’t think it’s been changed, though; no modern editor would permit “gypped” outside of historic use. (It’s complicated, though; the Roma people are actually from India, and their language is related to Hindi. But when they turned up in Europe several centuries ago, Egypt, not India, was the Westerners’ go-to place for mystyck woo-woo, so they let the word get around that they were from Egypt [hence, “Gypsies”] in the interest of getting more fortune-telling gigs. So, in a sense, “Egypt” and “’e gypped” aren’t even a real pun, because they’re practically the same word.)
I’m curious about the date, though. A “riding-around horse” is a hard thing to accept in the USA anywhere in my lifetime. Maybe as late as WW2 during rationing….

In the second panel, I really hope they’re talking about the horse.

Jeff makes an outrageous pun! Has anyone noticed other such puns in previous strips?

Haven’t you heard? A camel is a horse put together by a committee.

Why does he dialogue look typeset? Was the original too small to be legible at today’s teeny size?

Jeff probably got the camel from Little Egypt. Think Mutt is riding California Chrome.
