Ration coupons were valuable, especially on the black market. They were actually worth more than money.I was 5 or 6 years old when my Mother sent me to the store for a sack (bag, now) of sugar. She put the ration coupon and a dollar in a paper sack and away I went. The storekeeper tried to get me to buy candy. He laid several bars of candy out on the counter (I still remember one of them was a Hershey bar.) What he didn’t know was that I didn’t like candy, but I still would not have done that. I grabbed my sack and ran all the way home.Mother went back to the store. I didn’t go with her, but I don’t think the encounter was very pretty.

If he got to Alaska simply by continuing North, the city where he started out must be in the Pacific Ocean.

My rationing experience was in Viet Nam. Us army guys were rationed six cases of beer and six bottles of whiskey per month. I drank the beer and traded the whiskey to the nearby marines at Force Logistics Command for things like steaks for cookouts on the flight line, enough plywood to put a ceiling in my hootch, a tv and fridge, fans, etc.

I still have both some red and some blue point tokens from WWII — Red were used for meat products and blue for canned goods, etc,

If Jeff reaches the North Pole, how will he find his way back home? Go South?
