People were actually able to do that when Lincoln was president.

Wonder why Mutt packed, came along, and yet waited until now to ask why they were there…

White House in more accessible days. John Quincy Adams was swimming in the Potomac. Someone stole his clothes. He had to summon a kid over, tell him what room in the White House to enter, and get him to bring him some more clothes. It’s hard to imagine the number of alarms that would go off now.

I can’t tell, do you think Harry gave him a buck?

Well, actually, Truman completed FDR’s unfinished term, so it would be more like 1945-1952, but I’ll bet Truman was a little too busy to see Jeff that first couple of years.

Ironically, I am reading a book now called “1948” that talks about Truman’s unlikely victory when he won a term on his own.

Sure Truman liked Jeff, he was looking for someone shorter than he was.

Truman was a haberdasher – probably pleased to see someone still wearing a hat. Of course, Mutt had a hat as well! We actually saw Truman when he made his whistle-stop tour. In those days, there was an actual passenger train which stopped two or three times a week in one of the little towns nearby. So we went over there to see him. My sister and I were upset because he was supposed to arrive somewhere between The Lone Ranger and The Silver Eagle and we were not happy at the prospect of missing our favorite radio programs. However, his train was late so, since the train didn’t arrive until AFTER our favorite programs were on – we were willing to go out on the platform and listen to him speak. We sat in the car and listened to our programs on the radio. Nowadays, of course, Truman could no longer make a whistle stop tour because the train no longer stops at the majority of those little towns.
