Take a few more years before answering machines are invented.. or smart phones. Used to be that talking to yourself was considered a sure sign you were… loonie. Now.. with smart phones.. all those “loonies” are saved as the appearance of talking to yourself implies you have a friend or business tycoon making a deal.
As a child I heard about a test number one could dial to make the home phone ring after hanging up. Naturally, I had to try this and then left the house ……
At dinner, Dad mentioned that when he got home he could hear it ringing out in the driveway, fumbled with his keys to get in and answer it on time, but no one was on the line. I let it remain as one of those mysteries.
Moitle? No, telcos use street names as word prefixes, and this word means, “Having powers of self-motion, though unconscious.” Building a central office on a street like this is very improbable, like a 50% chance of rain. Either this or a misspelling of mohel.
Don’t see very many pay phones these days. I know of only two in locations I frequent. One is in the Whiting Stop & Shop, the other, oddly enough is just outside the lunch room of Dow Jones in Monmouth Junction.
