The last really heavy fog I recall in England must have been about ten years ago. It was freezing fog and I was on my way home from my hospital shift. The next thing I new I wax sliding across the grass verge and the Suzuki motorcycle had gone off on its own as I’d found the dreaded black ice. My shoulder was dislocated and a car stopped to help. The bike was lying in the road with its lights out. An ambulance was called and within minutes a fleet of ambulances and police cars went by. One police car stopped and checked on my injuries which I told him were not serious. He then told me that there had been a multiple crash further along the road. So my bad luck wasn’t as bad as it might’ve been. I was carted back to the hospital I’d left a little earlier to have the should put back. Other than that, some bumps and bruises I’d had a lucky escape. Happily I’ve not seen a thick fog since.

Living in Los Angeles we used to see heavy fogs in the mornings especially in the spring and early summer, the fogs would mix with the smog and leave a layer of mud on everything. Just one of many things I don’t miss from there.

Oddly I later lived in Daytona Beach, Florida and seldom saw a really dense fog even though the beach was less that a mile from my front door.

    It’s Jeff’s mind that’s foggy.

There have been very few heavy fogs since gasses and particulate emissions from burning coal that were condensation points for water have been reduced.

Good thing there wasn’t a hat launch, we wouldn’t be able to see it in all the fog.

Dr. Norton, where did you study medicine?

    Er . . . Oxford.

    Oh, in England.

Oh, is that where it is?

You studied at Oxford and don’t know where it is?

Well, it was so foggy over there, I never knew where I was.
