That night, Mutt waits for the wife to fall asleep, then tiptoes toward her with a razor . . .

Love it that she was heating her curling iron up on the stove. That means she probably also had to heat up her iron on the stove as well. In those days, she would have probably also been washing her clothes by hand as well. You put a large tub up on the stove and filled it with water you had pumped from the pump in the front yard. Then after the clothes were washed, she would have hung them on the line outside to dry. What always blew my mind about this time period is that after the clothes had dried, and were brought back into the house for ironing – people ironed stuff like pillow cases, sheets, towels, wash cloths and even socks and underwear! I remember how scandalized my mother was when she learned that I just brought the dry pillow cases and sheets back into the house, folded them up and – later – put them on the bed without ironing them! Mutt’s probably lucky that she merely curled his hair – she could have decided to iron it out straight – with no wrinkles – for him!

Mrs. Mutt usually has blonde hair.
