Hey, Justin, I understand. Until the end of May, I didn’t own an iPod Touch. Now I think it owns me.

That said, I don’t know what I’d do without it now. Marvelous tool, on a level of historical importance with the discovery of fire and the invention of the wheel. (All right, maybe not, but anything that lives up to Arthur C. Clarke’s fictional Minisec two centuries before its time rates highly in my book.)

You probably make more than I do, Justin, by the way. Give an iPod Touch a shot sometime. :)

Someone recently pointed out that, other than the Star Trek communicators, most Science Fiction technology remains just that: Fiction.

However, iPods, cell phones, and the like far outstrip what was predicted for communicators.

I recently reread Heinlein’s “The Long Watch”. The date the story was supposed to have taken place was June, 2009. In the story we had bases in the Moon, several large manned satellites, and had colonized Mars and Venus.

The story was written in the 1940’s. I think we could have done it. Technologically we could have achieved all that, and more. The problem is, we’re cowards. And, to paraphrase that great philosopher Daffy Duck, we’re greedy little cowards. Once we had a leader who inspired us collectively towards greatness. But we killed him. And there has been no one to take his place. So here we are, on a quickly dieing planet. And because any cure for our planets ills requires quick, decisive and world wide action, our way of life will doom us all.

“The Long Watch” is a truly heroic tale how the selfless actions of one man saved us all. Too bad solving the problems of real life are not resolved so simply.
