Poor Humpty! I never did get that part about the horses, either. Or was it pars pro toto for the cavalry (along with the infantry-men)?

The original Humpty Dumpty was not an egg, anyway. It was probably supposed to be Cardinal Wolsey, who was an adviser to Henry VIII. He tried to negotiate an agreement with the Catholic church to recognize Henry’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Still being Catholic and supporting Henry’s divorce is, politically, sitting on the wall. When he failed, he had a great fall. There are also other speculations about the origin. Dumpty basically meant a fat person, which Wolsey was.

“the King’s horses…” Cavalry troopers were issued one brain each; it usually went to the horse.

Edcole1961 I don’t think I’ve heard that version of the origin of Humpty Dumpty. Come to think of it, I don’t ever remember hearing anything about it at all. It was always just a pleasant, silly verse. Makes sense though. So many of our nursery rhymes and stories come from the Catholic Church. I was never a Catholic so I never grew up with them.

@Serena, I’ve always heard that most English nursery rhymes and stories come from English history–Queen Mary, Henry VIII, King George, the Black Death, and others.

Edcole1961, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpty_Dumpty lists several possibilities but not that one. Sounds good, maybe you should update the wiki entry.

Sorry to get off topic, but I just wanted to mention that today is February 3rd. It’s 51 years ago today the music died. Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and JP Richardson all died in a plane crash at Clear Lake, Iowa. Probably the first of many rock and roll tragedies. Live fast, die young and leave a good lookin’ corpse.

@ GreenBike Guy-“”Duck” tape? Is that a duck egg? Or do they use “duct” tape?

Humpty looks like he was “over easy”.
