It’s incredible that a record back then cost one dollar. There’s no date on this but it sounds like it’s from the 1950s, but even if we conservatively date this strip at 1960, that is $8.50 in 2019 dollars. It’s nice to know that music costs nowhere near that amount now.

I think this is still from the late 40s, (1949 was a date that we saw a lot)… I’ve not heard the term “sweet potatoes” applied to whatever instrument that is, but I think everyone knows drumsticks and even “platters”; I only heard “licorice stick” for the clarinet used in a movie: “The Benny Goodman Story”. :-)

I admit I had to look up the “sweet potato” reference…https://www.britannica.com/art/ocarina

3- SLUGGO: I don’t know the first thing about music so I just call stuff by what it looks like. I’m not always wrong though. That trick actually worked on the washtub bass we sell.

If you’re a fan of The Legend of Zelda, you’ll probably recognize the “Sweet Potatoes” (Ocarinas) immediately

Archaic nick-names for those instruments – interesting! I’m not familiar with them.

From what I was able to deduce, I believe this comic is from 1949. Here are what those prices would be worth in 2021: 75¢ would be worth around $8 or $9, $1 would be worth around $11 or $12, and $50 would be worth around $575.
