In panel #3, the Tiger seems to be viewing, or perhaps, smelling lunch while Sluggo gazes obliviously at hatless Spike, seen fleeing the scene like a bat outa hell… <—— I’ve wanted to type those four words for a long time… and, free hat for Sluggo!
What we’ve been seeing is an arms race. Sluggo debuted as a tough character in a horizontally striped shirt. Spike’s stripes, however, are wider and heavier, so he defeated Sluggo.
Now look at the stripes on that cat! And remember that Sluggo’s okay unless and until he turns around.

Fun fact: the actor in the tiger suit is none other than Shakespearean actor Sir Patrick Stewart!

If that tiger ate Spike, it would have the s**ts for a month.

When I was in the army back in the 70s, those with haircuts like Spike’s were advertising their preferred recreational indulgences.

Sluggo it seems has a poor sense of others and smell.
