Well, yeah, I could have made the same point with a better known character… but I loved Sister Sixto… she had literal mindedness and malapropisms going on simultaneously.
If Pee-wee is so literal one wonders how he knew what to do to ‘go on a walk’? Since walk is a verb meaning an action or a movement. Shouldn’t he be told to go outside ‘for a walk’ on the sidewalk?
Second one in a few weeks I just don’t get. Am I too old for Nancy? Too dumb for Nancy? Early sign of dementia? Is Pee Wee doing a pirouette? If so, how did he know his father’s instructions to turn around? Is his father just looking for an excuse to talk to Fritzi? Are those white strips on Pee Wee glare on the window glass, or explanations of the dance step? I will say, the third panel is interesting in the use of speech bubbles as figure ground.
PeeWee is such a literal fellow. Sometimes… such thought IS useful… but if it is his ONLY method to think and reason… his verbal skills will not be particularly “colloquial” nor “colorful” in terms of analogies. Both verbal precision, and alliterative allusions are beautiful and important.
