I once met a nice little old lady who used to be the next-door neighbor of Grace Metalious, the author of the then-scandalous 1950’s novel “Peyton Place”. The old woman told me of once entering Metalious’s house to find her just staring at her typewriter. When the lady asked what was going on, Metalious replied, “I’m getting to know my characters.”
