I think its the other way around.
They’re not. The term “john” as a customer has the same derivation as “John Doe” - a generic name for any man. “John” as a name for toilet is an Americanization of the phrase “I have to go see my friend Jack” meaning use a toilet.
Jack for a toilet makes no sense. They were named Johns after Prince John of Robin Hood fame, for being so evil.
