Languages are allowed to evolve; otherwise we would all be speaking Anglo-Saxon.
Grammar should be determined by what is actually in the sentence, not in what is “understood”. You can read into “She is taller than I [am tall]”, but how do you do that with “Everyone is better than I”?
It’s time to recognize that everyone except the grammar police now uses “than” as a preposition as well as a conjunction (just like “but”), and some day the dictionaries will catch up.
