Homer: I'm gonna be born when?! God: Never mind, Homer. Just don't forget to pack your karma. It's the year A.D. 476. An asteroid belt drifts into earth's orbit around the sun, bringing about an annual meteor storm that will plague the planet for centuries to come. This was the beginning of the Dark Ages. This period was called the Dark Ages because it was literally that...dark. The constant bombardment of small meteors propelled dust into the atmosphere, blocking out most life-giving sunlight. The growing seasons were short, crops sparse, and starvation was common. All human development came to an abrupt halt at this time in teh struggle to avoid extinction. It would take another 1000 years for the skies to clear, rekindling mankind's drive for creativity and invention, known to us today as the Renaissance. Until then, people had to survive the elements...and each other. Next week: A new beginning to an old story.
