Ordinary Basil. Basil and Louise had had to piece together Morluk's story: His revered "Fire-Giver" appeared to be none other than the evil Dr. Von Rottweil, who apparently had escaped the Odian Palace with stolen power crystals. For his own warmth and survival, the doctor had used the crystals to start a fire. Now the primitive people of the ice cave depended on them for light and heat, and Von Rottweil was seen as a benevolent demigod. Morluk smiled broadly as he excitedly explained: "The great Fire-Giver said the arrival of strangers would foretell his return!" "If Von Rottweil made it out of here once," Basil whispered to Louise, "why would he ever risk coming back?" "The crystals!" Louise shouted. "He'd come back to get the crystals!" "Oh, you clever little girl!" sneered a frighteningly familiar voice. Basil and Louise spun around apprehensively while Morluk gazed in stunned reverence. "--but, but..." Louise stammered, "how did you get out of jail in Helios?" "All you need to kno
