joe, the guy delievers flowers, he doesn’t make the arrangements. he gps’s his way to their location. he doesn’t know what his got till he gets there. this order may have been several days late. in either case…….. big oops. not even close, luvh8.
We lived about an hour or so away from the funeral parlor where my aunt was laid out. The viewing was at 10:00 a.m. with the interment at noon at the cemetery. We got to the viewing and there were NO flowers from us. We’d ordered them days before! What was sad was, we were basically the only people there! No flowers, no people…How sad is that! We did phone the florist and raised cain (no obscenities) and got flowers by about 11:45…They probably thought we’d not notice since we lived “far away.”
Jeepers, Joe-Allen “Joe” Doty, you don’t have to read obscenity into the bleeep acronym if you don’t want to. Heck, it’s a polite substitution, much like using an asterisk (or should I use “*terisk?”
Jiminy Crickets, sometimes you seem to go out of your way to find something to be PO’d about.
This is variation of old joke. Businessman to florist, “The flowers you sent to my store opening said ‘In deepest sympathy’.” Florist, “I could have been worse. The flowers at the funeral said ‘Good luck in your new location’,”
The resident prig rides again
Upon his high horse he does sit

It causes him to have a fit

Joe–I think the statistics would show the word in question is far more commonly used in the context of “…up beyond all recognition” than the context you describe. Kind of like how the “word that rhymes with ‘fit’” (as Mojo Nixon described it) is used to describe random stuff far more often than the substance it officially refers to…
How long did it take you to think up that clever (if a little mean spirited) little rhyme wndrwrthg? Or are you like my father who has a gift for making these things up on the spot? I wish i could do that.
Why refrain from using obscene acronyms on GoComics? Because kids might read the site? It’s not our obligation to censor content because parents may leave their children unsupervised. The Internet is an adult space & I refuse to censor what I say because someone’s precious snowflake might see it.
I understand why things like that need to be censored. Would you want to be the one to explain to a child what something like that means? They do like to ask questions.
It doesn’t offend me, but I am not quick enough to substitute ‘fouled’ on the spot.
serena you’re not missing a thing. Even when he doesn’t say anything controversial, someone will still start something with him. And they call him vicious!
I myself prefer Ronald Regan’s version: when he responded, perhaps with a pithy ejaculation, to a reporter’s question, the official explanation was that he had said, sotto voce, “It’s sunny and you’re rich!”
Thank you rac0308, since I am on dial up I open a few windows at once, so sometimes miss comments made several minutes before I comment.
I never saw the training films, but had heard those were military acronyms.
serenasakitty - There were three comments by Mr Doty, in the third one he explained what the word beginning with F was supposed to be, that one is gone.
SNAFU & FUBAR both acronyms had military origins that used the infamous F* word. Many have substituted another F word for it Frack is the latest one from Battlestar Galactica.
Here in Utah flip or flipping is common.
Utah with the local main religion have their own lexicon for cleaning up expressions. One is ’ What the heck’
I must lead a sheltered life. (Yes, I haven’t had to be around much profanity in 20 years.) I saw the FUBAR acronym, and wasn’t familiar with it. Okay, so I could figure out what the first two letters stood for, but not the rest. However, being a homeschool mom, I’ve had LOTS of experience answering questions from my kids. It is possible to tell them “it is an acronym for words we don’t use, but means things aren’t as they should be” or something like that. I’d much rather people use acronyms or substitutions than spelling out the foul language. If a child’s mind hasn’t been corrupted, it can still remain so.
From as far back as I can remember, I have always understood that the “F” in the acronyms FUBAR and SNAFU stood for the word “fouled” (which actually makes more sense than the profanity that so many other people read it as meaning).
After spending three years in the Army, I can state unequivocally that the “F” does NOT stand for “fouled”, except in polite company, perhaps, or in GoComics comments…
Foozle sounds good to me, too.
I spent 14yrs in the service and I’ve heard it said with the “F” word and many others including “Futzed Up” blah, blah, blah. It’s in the mind of the beholder. The way they wish to perceive it. When my kids come across it, I’ll explain it.
For years growing up I never understood my father being annoyed at someone and calling them a Prince. As in ” a real Prince of a fellow”. Took me until I was about 18 to figure that one out, then I laughed for hours. Still use it myself. After I figured that one out, he explained Fubar & Snafu…..
I remember a kid in school who was always trying to draw attention to himself when all the other kids were trying to hear the teacher. He would just make noise and say things that had nothing to do with anything. This went on and on and on because the teacher kept on shifting gears and paying him attention, asking him why he was doing what he was doing. He had no reason for the things he said or did sans getting attention. Then, one day, the teacher ignored the kid. He continued on after that trying to regain the teacher’s and other students’ attention until on day, he realized no one was focusing on his anymore. When this reality set in, the obnoxious kid shut up, and the teacher and students were able to accomplish the tasks at hand. Even the obnoxious, attention seeking kid benefited by learning to focus and keep his big mouth shut.
I’ll bet everyone knows a story like this in their own lives.
OMG! Don’t some of you people have ANYTHING BETTER TO DO!? Good gawd! You all keep this S H I S E up, and GOCOMICS is going to shut down ANY COMMENTING WHAT SO EVER!
