Teacher: Now, class, Danae will present us with an alternate conclusion to Jeffrey's science report. Danae: Which I call the truth! First of all, my holy scriptures show that the age of the dinosaurs was 67 years ago... Teacher: OK... Danae? I'm 63 years old. Danae: I present you with Exhibit A... Students: Oooh... now it makes sense. Teacher: 2 more years until retirements... 2 more years...

Danae’s going to see the principal really soon.

I get the feeling Teacher’s going to sneak off to the women’s room with her bottle after this class. . .

and if it lands on end…nope. but i gotta admit this could turn into a great riff on “Creationist” theory.

NO—-Mr. Miller is showing that the facts based on empirical scientific methods take precedence over religious beliefs which are based on just that….beliefs.
perceptor3 over 13 years ago
So, will Mr. Miller’s likeness be standing on top of a golden calf?
Science trumps religion? Hardly. Quite frankly, I just shake my head at this whole argument. People on both sides of it dig their heels in like stubborn mules, neither refusing to budge. Ever think there might be something in the middle? That’s how life is, often enough. . .
perceptor3 over 13 years ago
I didn’t. Just stating my opinion on the subject. Been a lot of both science and religion bashing going on all over this site the last few days. . .

And the “golden calf” comment adds to the mockery. . .

That’s just too funny!! I’m with you, let’s just meet in the middle.

Speaking of the Middle East conflict: isn’t most of that born out of opposing religions?I’d be genuinely interested if you could supply details of a national conflict that was born out of differing scientific schools of thought?

Danae’s teacher is the unfortunate victim of a world view that most under 25’s share – anyone over the age of 30 is an old dinosaur!
Proginoskes over 13 years ago
It would have been funnier if Danae had said that dinosaurs were around 57 years ago …

Too bad that Mr. Miller is using this great forumn to bash religion and particularly the Bible. Other fearless comic strip writers have gone there and gotten this right. There is only one “Truth” in the universe and upon careful investigation one can find that both science and the Bible are the truth, not mutually exclusive spheres as so many have been led to believe. Real joy and understanding are available to those that make this investigation in earnest. Peace to those that see the light and make this effort.

I sure wish that God would take the time to make an appearance and clear up all this confusion. Seems like He should have done it many years ago.

TimeWeaver thinks I should reread Leviticus with regard to yesterday’s comment. I made essentially one claim about religions: they attempt to explain stuff. The final paragraph builds on that premise: doctrine is developed for the purpose of fleshing out the explanation, not “invented just for the purpose of bullying people.”.I think we have a communication barrier. Leviticus is a book of rules. I was discussing doctrine – beliefs – not rules of conduct. .The bullying I had in mind is exactly what’s going on in today’s strip. Danae is preaching an idea just for the sake of getting attention and antagonizing people. I have seen this in real life – some jerk argues a belief too incomprehensibly surreal to listen to without the brain hurting..Religions aren’t like that. Their freak people out not by design but because different people have different explanations for stuff.

Science and Religion are both based on human understanding and thus prone to error. In both we learn more the more we look. When I was younger Evolution was taught as a theory because there were “missing links” I have never heard of those links being found but suddenly it is fact. There are still many things that science can not explain so it just dismisses them. We can not intelligently say there is not God because we do not know everything, if we did then we would be God; so either there is a God above us or we know it all and are gods. Based on actions I have seen humans take I prefer the first.

“debates” about religion and politics on the internet, meet the reason why you’re absolutely pointless:

Danae demonstrates in her own person that the age of dinosaurs is now. But see The Incredible Shrinking Church, by a past President of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Wiley – Love the sidelong glance Danae’s giving her teacher in panel 4 (or is it 3.5?)!You get so much from just a few lines – you’re a master of minimalist expressionism!

after enduring Danae, i wouldn’t begrudge that “union thug” one cent of her retirement…
phoenixnyc about 13 years ago
As an aside, it would be poetic justice if, the next time Danae asks Jeffrey for help with one of her schemes, he told her that he wouldn’t want to muddle her “truth” with science.

weasel monkey: How so? Both the OT Bible and the Qu’ran clearly state the land belongs to the children (plural) of Abraham which at least includes both Ishmael and Isaac. Both sources say both brothers were involved in Abraham’s funeral – since that meddling Sarah was out of the way. The scriptures are clear – get along! And history shows they did so quite well, more or less, in spite of the Crusades, including Christians as well, until the 20th century. If Europeans (including western hemisphere European transplants) would stay out, it might be possible even now.

And this is WHY I have always said “When I was a kid, and dinosaurs roamed the earth…”

I know that Wiley Miller is trying to make fun of creationism in this strip, and although I believe in the Creation (which Louis Pasteur and St. Thomas Acquinas proved had to happen in Principle), this just cracked me up.
weasel_monkey about 13 years ago
So you are deliberately misunderstanding my question so you can score a few cheap points? Yes, Global Warming has aroused strong national debate or “conflict”… but I think we can actually exclude this debate from the list of the worlds national conflicts until Lord Monkcton pulls a gun on Al Gore.

She must not be in WI – retirement with full pension & benefits (incl health care) at 55 for teachers…plus she can get rehired by the state and earn a full salary on top of retirement.

@FishStix: I’ll hit 67 in February; those weren’t dinosaurs roaming the streets when we were kids, they were Hudsons and Packards and Studes (oh, my!) I miss those lumbering beasts! (especially the Studebaker- remember the Avanti?-, which fell closer to the velociraptor category; how long has it been since every car from every year didn’t look basically the same?)
bluskies about 13 years ago
@Jgarth et al- Mr. Miller did not create the comments section, Go Comics did. Wiley merely creates an idea to think about; it’s the readers who take it to unstated extremes. Ease up a litte. in another 100 years or so it won’t matter to you one way or the other.

There is a theory in psychology that there are multiple levels of intelligence. There are those that have no moral standards and are driven only by a reaction to existing laws. Then there are those that require others to set their moral compass, they lack the ability to self-actualize and have to be guided by others. Lastly, there are those that reach a higher state of consciousness, inherently understand right from wrong and are able to make decisions based on their own internal moral compass.
Religion falls into the second category. People are unable to make ethical decisions for themselves without looking at a book for guidelines. They were indoctrinated as children and have never had a chance to form their own moral compass. They have no concept of how people can exist to follow morals and react only to a fear of the unknown.
Once you evolve your consciousness, you will understand that a book is unnecessary to a person’s sense of morality – it comes from within.
Science is the ability to prove a theory based on facts. Creationism is not a theory, because there is not a shred of evidence to support it. While religion plays a positive role in helping to guide the decisions of people who lack a moral understanding, it has also been manipulated as the driving force between nearly every major war. When everyone finally evolves beyond religion, the world will be a much safer place and we can finally work together to understand the rest of our universe.
