Connecticut’s Joe Lieberman may be the only completely honest senator. He actually tells people what he really thinks, and has p.o.‘d both Democrats and Republicans (he was Al Gore’s running mate in 2000, and is now an independant). And after about 24 years in the Senate, he’s quitting.

Corruption via lobbyists happen on both sides. The right just utilizes them more.
@exoticdoc2, unionS are not corrupt. Don’t cave in to Republican garbage rhetoric.

Every time a politician does tell the truth, those who don’t want to hear it are appalled, angry, aghast, etc. The truth hurts and that’s why people get upset and have knee-jerk reactions. Bring back the Ronal Reagans and Andrew Jacksons. They were not necessarily popular but they had guts and determination to get things done.
wowbert about 12 years ago
Ditto about Ron Paul, the only honest one. Never voted for an unbalanced budget, never voted for a war, never voted to take away our liberties never voted to violate his oath to the Constitution (if you know what that is—or have ever read it?).
chassimmons Premium Member about 12 years ago
@wowbert: Sometimes, like now, during a depression, you WANT an unbalanced budget. And Ron Paul’s bogus ideas on economics are pretty frightening. Better not have anyone like him making policy.

C. W. alias Bill Young probably isn’t dishonest he just thinks someone is stalking him and breaks into his condo and moves stuff but the police have found no evidence.

In essence, there’s no hope since all politicians are bought and paid for. So, it must be our system that needs a complete overhaul.BTW, unions don’t have enough money to buy more than one or two politicians.

No, no, no. It’s all the other guys that are corrupt, my guy is okay. Why? because his ads say so. See? My guy is ‘Fighting’ for me. It’s all those others that are the real problem. So I give an approval rating of 10% to Congress in general but about 60% to my current rep. And now you know why Congress never changes.

Try Bernie Sanders – the only true Independent in the Senate. Joe Lieberman is in the pocket of the insurance companies that dominate Connecticut’s economy. That’s why he insisted that Obamacare include mandates and subsidies for the insurance companies or he’d block passage. Bernie is leading the effort to overturn Citizen’s United…

Everyone thinks all Congressmen are corrupt, yet they still keep reelecting their own Reps and Sens. Time to sweep the board clean, people.
tcolkett about 12 years ago
It’s simplistic to just sit here and talk about how politicians are all crooked, blah, blah, blah, and…well maybe this one was or is a little less crooked, blah, blah, blah…but the real discussion needs to be about how we get money out of politics. If our representatives were forced to run for office based on their real qualities, having to face the American people on public airwaves (which we all pay for) to tell the truth about what they see as the future of our country and debate it honestly with other pols doing the same, there would be a chance that we could have an actual conversation and vote intelligently and informed. But, we’ve decided that it would be a better idea to let outside groups, with special interests, spend billions of dollars to distort and mislead the voters . Now…watch… as the right wing trolls pounce on why this is wrongheaded of me. (And also, I mean this bipartisanly: this applies to corporations and unions and anyone else. No money in politics, before it’s too late!)

We (the electorate) DO make the politicians lie. If they tell the truth (taxes need to be raised, etc.), we don’t elect them.

Seems to me that ex-senator Russ Feingold was pretty honest. According to Wikipedia, he “cosponsored the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (McCain–Feingold Act), a major piece of campaign finance reform legislation. He was the only Senator to vote against the USA PATRIOT Act during the first vote on the legislation.” He later paid for his views by losing his Senate race.

Lobbying is killing the American dream. Now only the wealthy can afford representation.
dabugger about 12 years ago
Far from truth for way too many who want only their own way; after all, they are paid by that 1% exclusively. Not representatives of the people; except paid by all of us….we need a refund!!!!!!
Vonne Anton about 12 years ago
Politics without money…hmmm…sounds so…so…idealistic. Wish it could be so, but alas poor Yorick…Does everyone here realize that before YOU – the honest, brave, smart person left in this country – can run for office, you will need money for TV/radio ads, bumper stickers, signs and billboards all over the country, campaign offices in each state fully staffed, a bus or plane so you can tour and make speeches, a posse of lawyers, accountants, PR experts, speech writers, etc, etc, etc.? Where will you get that money? Mostly from people or corporations who will pay you filthy lucre to support their cause. You’ll have to sell yourself to even try. It’s polluted before you even get started….I call it pollutitics.

The president we need now is Theodore Roosevelt — a Republican who was a social-justice progressive and busted up business monopolies, and who not only stood for personal integrity, courage, and grit, but personified it. The Republican party has gone downhill ever since.

Bernie Sanders! He tells it like it is. Alone voice for truth in the maelstrom of congressional corruption! And that other Dem. from Florida who lost his seat, you know, the one who described the Repubicant health plan as “die quickly”.

amazing how many ignorant anti union people comment here. just shows how repeating the same lies over the last 40 years has worked. don’t expect the truth to matter now adays.
stupid America, bought and paid for.
hippogriff about 12 years ago
Sanders, definitely, but he isn’t even permitted to identify his party (Socialist). .T. Roosevelt on domestic policy but not on foreign. Reagan sat out WW-II at Fort Roach when the rest took a combat tour (even if just behind the lines morale act). Vera Lynn lied about her age and at least two concerts were within the sound of guns – while I can’t find if Reagan even made a war bond tour – Carole Lombard was killed coming back from one.
Gokie5 about 12 years ago
Oh. That was too subtle for me!

Although he wasn’t a Congressman, I always admired Leroy Collins, former governor of Florida. His chances for election to the Senate were destroyed because his picture with the Rev.Martin Luther King, Jr., was circulated around with no explanation, and it was assumed that he had participated in the march on Selma. However, as Wikipedia states, “In fact, Collins had not been participating the march, but was shuttling back and forth between the marchers and the Alabama authorities to attempt to craft a compromise which would avoid violence. He conducted these negotiations as a part of his job as head of the Community Relations Service. He was successful in these negotiations as violence was averted when the marchers crossed the bridge, prayed, and then returned to the other side.”

I believe the continued act of compromise erodes the ethics and morals of any elected official. I figure by the time they reach a second term, they have no ethics and very few morals left……

@cdward“… unions don’t have enough money to buy more than one or two politicians…” some of the biggest lobbiest expenditures came from unions. this is public record.

I am a great fan of Joe Lieberman’s. However I am sure that he is as beholden to lobbyists as anyone. As for supporting Israel, someone in government has to support the only real ally we have besides England.
