One of the few things I miss about living in Florida is Spring Training. I lived less than an hour’s drive from my Red Soxs spring training camp in Ft. Meyers, the Rays in Pt. Charlotte, the Orioles and Reds in Sarasota, and the Pirates in Bradenton.
This is especially important for me, because I’m not much of a football fan. I had to keep reminding myself to put a radio in my backpack for today so I can actually hear the game.
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone – the sun came out today! We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field.A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man;Anyone can understand the way I feel.
Chorus:Oh, put me in, Coach – I’m ready to play today;Put me in, Coach – I’m ready to play today;Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin’ it from the bench; You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out.So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe Dimaggio;Don’t say “it ain’t so”, you know the time is now.
Chorus
Yeah! I got it, I got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes; You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride.Just to hit the ball and touch ‘em all – a moment in the sun;(pop) It’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!
I can now stop hearing about how many days until spring training! And my husband will be keeping himself in his man cave and will not be under foot. So as much as I don’t care for baseball, I guess I kinda like it.
I’m afraid I lost interest in professional baseball after the last players’ strike. Reggie Jackson, in an attempt to stir up fan support for the players’ position in the dispute, stated that he’d had to sell two of his antique automobiles from his collection in order to make up for his lost income. So by and large, I gave up on professional sports. However, I’m still a rabid follower of the Little League World Series every August. (Of course, in Little League baseball, even the pitcher has to take a turn at bat.)

Anybody that doesn’t like baseball,
Anybody that thinks it’s too boring.,
You’re welcome to take over that cave during baseball season.

Not that its spring. It would be nice if all sports seasons got cut by a third.
