Funny how the hatred expressed in the US towards Muslims, atheists, non-hetero, and Latinos today, resembles the hatred expressed in the US towards the Chinese, Irish, Catholics, and women (through misogyny) from about 100 years ago, isn’t it.
We had a family Black Lab who thought indoor cats were family. She tried to make friends with my first cat when she visited with my cat in MN, but he hissed and ran into my bedroom. She stood in my kitchen and whimpered. She won him over by pretending to sleep and slowly wagging her tail so he’d play with it. As he played with it, she’d peek at him with one eye barely open. She was a very smart dog! Pax was the best dog. Pixel turned out to be a wonderful cat.
A friend of mine Tae Kwon Do teacher is an African American (he’s a ‘Grandmaster’) when he started training the white students raised a fuss. The teacher told the students: “My Dojang is open to anyone who is willing to learn. If you have a problem with that then leave.” Ironic, they had no issue with the Korean teacher.
There’s suppose to be same-sex marriage available here in Australia – by law – and the churches still don’t want it. “Ironic how even-handed bigotry can be. isn’t it?”
Ignorance is the mother of hate. The only way to reverse this human trate is a great education. And to provide this great education for all we must raise taxes to pay for it. Like it or not, this is the only answer. We spend billions yearly on alcoholic beverages and entertainment but won’t face the fact that we must pay for a great education for our children in order to eradicate hate for each other.
Ellen Degeneris sits with W at the Cowboy’s — Green Bay game a couple of weeks ago and gets excoriated for doing so.
Here are a couple of thoughts: 1. Ostracize and shun anyone who might not agree with your worldview. For really egregious offenders, dox them.2. Demonstrate the type of tolerance that you demand of people you disagree with. Remember, for every analogy that “_________is like Hitler”, the counter argument, “___________’s behavior has been strictly prohibited by 3 of the world’s major religions for millennia.” As far as I can tell, W (by the way, I’m not a W fan) didn’t start any death camps. In fact funding for world AIDS relief (PEPFAR—Google it) was started under W, and since 2010, “funding has remained essentially flat”. If we are going to be able to survive as a nation and a culture, we will need to keep a dialogue going with those we disagree with. Being offended by someone’s comment doesn’t mean that your right. I put out the challenge to carry on a discussion with those you might disagree with. No one ever “won” anyone to their side by screaming at them first.
When I was a teen (many years ago) I went on a trip with my friend and her parents down south. We stopped at a take away place to get a bite to eat and as I walked up to the window there were 2 kids of color my age standing there already but as I approached they both stepped out of line for me to go ahead of them. I didn’t know what to do. I told them to go ahead they were there first but they wouldn’t take their place back in line so I went ahead but said thank you. Didn’t know what else to do. I felt sad about it.
These comments would be funny if not so illustrative and pathetically common.
Mistrust of “the Other” has been throughout history and, no doubt, before. What we seem to rant about is a reflection of what the 24-hour news throws at us. We no longer interact with enough of a diverse group to see ourselves in the strip.
Discomfort with numbers adds to this. I just read today that “nearly 75 thousand gunshot deaths from 2017 (last date of record)” were made worse by eight being killed in less that thirty seconds. Really??? First 75K were tolerable until the last eight? Guess which group got the most air time.
What’s the old rhyme: there’s so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us that it ill behooves any of us to talk about the rest of us. In any case, I’ve got the April 2018 issue of NG where I can see it. The entire issue is about “race,” of which, scientifically, there is only one, human. And that “race” shares 99% of its DNA with chimpanzees. My favorite quote from the entire issue Is: "Science today tells us that the visible differences between peoples are accidents of history. They reflect how our ancestors dealt with sun exposure, and not much else.’ (p. 40) Thank you for letting me share.
The company I work for has a “diversity council.” I was asked to be on it and refused. When asked why I explained that in my experience the ones who preached “diversity” the most were the most bigoted!
One week of every year is designated national brotherhood week. This is just one of many such weeks honoring various worthy causes. One of my favorites is national make-fun-of-the-handicapped week,Which Frank Fontaine and Jerry Lewis are in charge of as you know.During national brotherhood week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood. This year, for example, on the first day of the week Malcolm X was killed which gives you an idea of how effective the whole thing is.
I’m sure we all agree that we ought to love one another and I know there are people in the world that do not love their fellow human beings and I hate people like that. Here’s a song about national brotherhood week.
Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,And the black folks hate the white folks. To hate all but the right folksIs an old established rule.
But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week,Lena Horne and sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek. It’s fun to eulogizeThe people you despise,As long as you don’t let ’em in your school.
Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,And the rich folks hate the poor folks. All of my folks hate all of your folks,It’s American as apple pie.
But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week,New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans ‘cause it’s very chic.Step up and shake the handOf someone you can’t stand. You can tolerate him if you try.
Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,And the Catholics hate the Protestants,And the Hindus hate the muslems,And everybody hates the Jews.
But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week,It’s national everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood week.Be nice to people whoAre inferior to you. It’s only for a week, so have no fear.Be grateful that it doesn’t last all year!
Haters gonna hate… we all live on this small blue green planet suspended in our orbit by a force we don’t quite understand and we better figure out how to get along pretty soon.
Enlightened living with our fellow humans still eludes us. But we’ve come a long way, and still have a long way to go. We will get there, perhaps not in my lifetime, but we will.
How can people in the United States be expected to like and get along with people from other nations, when the national pastime in the U.S. is hating and fighting with each other?
If you watch little children in a preschool or daycare center, they don’t notice ethnicity, religion, gender, etc. They play with and around children that they have fun with - they avoid the bullies and that’s about all. I once heard an adult commenting to my granddaughter about her Mexican friend. She gave the woman a puzzled look and asked ‘who?’ She only knew him as her friend, not as a ‘Mexican’ (actually, his ancestry was Peruvian-Irish). Similarly, all through grade school, when she made out the lists of people to invite to her birthday parties, she just had lists of names-not girls and boys - just friends-and no one cared if there were 4 boys and 6 girls or 6 boys and 4 girls. She just chose people she liked. It takes adults to make those kinds of distinctions. [Sigh] she will be going into middle school next year and then the distinctions will start (boy-girl dances instead of class parties, separate gym classes, etc.).
Hate is taught, not born. Only the old and bitter can ever teach hate. The young know only how to love unless taught to hate. Hate and bitterness is a cancer that only serves to poison you while believing it strengthens you. Hate never helped anyone.
I believe this comic is about treating people badly because they are different-bad! Now, here are a very few commenters treating each other badly the right way: Arguing because of different ideas. It is a discussion and can lead to new ideas and agreement. But the comic is about treating people badly because they are different.
Don’t project your own biases and bigotry on Trump and his supporters. This bs has gone on long enough. Yes, there are bigoted people, but they are not everyone who has opposing political views than you.
It seems that we have a propencity to hate those unlike us which we do not know. It is so easy to blanket rail against any one group (fill in the blank) instead of looking in the mirror.
When I complain to friends, family or acquaintences that my company cannot hire a highly skilled employee from another company because of the #$%^&* artifically low cap on visas, most immediately jump on the boogy-man – illegal immigration. Thank you Trump -NOT!

I love my neighbors; it’s those other people I can’t stand.
If you are a church goer, look left and right of you in the pew. How many of those people look exactly like you?
I think it was Martin Luther King, Jr. who said (and this is paraphrasing), “The most bigoted place in America is church on Sunday morning.”
