My dad used to say “don’t cut your foot”. Apparently that was what HIS father said, so as to avoid mentioning the material directly, but was also quick to say and easily heard (and understood once explained).

When I was in school my teachers used to call spurious arguments (and other things they didn’t approve of) “Bull Dust”. We all knew what they meant, and ‘dust’ wasn’t any part of it …

I was watching CNN late one night and saw a press conference. Someone said, “My client said an eight-letter word with a bovine context. Do you want me to say [the actual word]? Okay: [the actual word].” CNN can use the same salty language that HBO can use, and it was late at night. Decency watchdog groups may call BS on that.

According to a friend of mine, who retired from the U.S. diplomatic corps, the only difference between a diplomat and a politician is that while both are accomplished liars, the politician has more larceny in his heart.

Congress is the reflection of the American electorate. Mocking it is mocking ourselves. Don’t like what Congress is about? Go vote. When more than half the country gets in on the selection, mayhaps we’ll find their attitudes more amenable?

Have you ever noticed that, for any obscene or scatological word you care to name, there’s a socially acceptable euphemism? And the “nice” version is readily understood to mean the exact same thing as the “naughty” one. Why do people get all bent out of shape over the “bad” ones? Words never hurt anybody. “Don’t steal my words!” —Lenny Bruce, American satirist

Once worked at an outdoor theater adjacent to a cow pasture. The farmer was concerned the actors would disturb his dairy cows. The lawyers didn’t feel the term “cows” to be specific enough. So the theater’s contract designated them as “bovine units”.
