As I age, I have figured out why our parents chuntered about how our music “is just noise.” It’s not necessarily the music, it’s older folks’ hearing range. Suddenly the lyrics are just mush…not because they’re terrible (it happens with songs I love, too) but because we’ve lost part of the range.
@Nabuquduriuzhur: Well, there’s rap music I actually like, but granted, it tends to be the exception rather than the rule, and for the most part I agree with most of the rest of what you said.
But you forgot to mention the most horrible, grating, unpleasant music genre of all: polka. I’m convinced that in hell there’ll be a thirty-second loop of polka music that repeats over and over forever.

French rap is actually pretty darn good. Not “hate music” but biting social criticism with real point.

jonadab: Polka: Bavarian um-pah played by a half-drunk C&W band, I can agree. Strauss polkas played by the Vienna Philharmonic, I can’t agree.
