They were trying to fool the audience into thinking they were in a movie theater. In Panel 4 their prop seats fell backward, showing the blank wall behind them. After replacing the prop seats in Panel 4, the lugworm started to ask if the gull thought the audience (us) noticed in Panel 6. The gull didn’t think so. That’s what I got out of it. I didn’t say it was funny.
