    This could also be a joke about the poor color vision of dogs.Actually, all placental mammals are descended from one mammal that was nocturnal, and consequently saw with only two primary colors. Only some apes, including us, have a mutation to see three primary colors. Our more distant ancestors saw with four primary colors, as birds still do. Sigh!
