    We clean the ditches every spring so the hay won’t have non-grass stuff in it. You would not believe what pigs some people are.

    Wait, you probably would. But there sure are some people who don’t care about litter and pollution—as long as it’s not on their property.

    Back in the days before computers, I heard of programs where children could write to other children in foreign countries who were trying to learn English, and reading and responding to letters was supposed to encourage them. Email and message boards changed everything, made such exchanges more ad hoc.

    I had a pen pal in Austria when I was a kid. We wrote back and forth in English. At the time, Austria was behind the Iron Curtain. She stopped writing after the 1980 Olympics. I wrote her how excited everyone was when the US beat the Soviet Union in Ice Hockey and I never heard from her again. I have always hoped the KGB didn’t arrest her and her family as subversive.
