Despite a few episodes to the contrary (e.g., a 9/11 tribute), OBH is supposed to be set in the past. Laws, or at least which laws got enforced, were different then.
I open my neighbor’s mailbox sometimes to put in their mail when it is delivered to me by mistake. That seems quicker and easier than putting it back in my box for the mailman to pick up the next day.
A long time ago, I was selling Avon. I hung my catalogs on the mailbox flags in my neighborhood. The mailman stopped me and told me I was committing a felony. I had to go back through my neighborhood and move all of my catalogs.
Someone in our neighborhood has been opening mailbox lids and get away with it. When we get someone else’s mail close by easier to put in their mail box then send back to postal service.

I think your right skeeterhawk, I believe it is illegal to put mail in someone else’s mail box. it has to go through proper channels…….LOL
