Do libraries still have card catalogs? I have a library card in my wallet but haven’t been in the building in about twenty years.

I was chatting with this nice old man in a computer lab in the 1970’s when I noticed his ID badge: J. W. Mauchly. Swiftly I thought back over our conversation and realized I had been explaining how hard it was to compete against IBM to a co-inventor of the ENIAC and co-founder of UNIVAC, the machine and company that founded the computer industry. (I regret never having met the other “smart guy”, J. P. Eckert, despite his being a V.P. of our company.)

I still miss encyclopedias. I do read Britannica online but to me it’s not the same.

I’d have used the Jacquard loom for punch cards. Invented in 1804 by a Frenchman.

The font used makes this comic very difficult to read.

At one point, a “computer” was a person. Calculations were down with pencils, paper, slide rules, etc.
