At one time in my checkered past I did food demos in grocery stores. I had a spot about two blocks from a senior apartment building, pushing yogurt, which was “brand new” to many Americans in 1983. I asked one elderly woman if she’d like to try some and she made the sort of noises Ruthie is making. As she walked away, I muttered “A simple ‘No Thank You’ would have been sufficient”, and a young mother gave me a big smile. She pointed to her little girl, and said, “My, I’m glad you said that.”

In fact, the official languages of Belgium are French and Dutch (and German). Flemish is a dialect, like an Australian accent. But, not to quibble – if you have heard Dutch or Flemish spoken, the “Phlegmish” joke hits the mark.

It wasn’t until I visited Belgium that I knew that Dutch and Flemish were basically the same.

That’s what Flemish always sounded like to me.

Once a year a Belgian missionary would come to speak at our church, and after listening to that poor guy, i always sympathetically felt the urge to clear my throat.
