    Sadly for Uncle Hiram, there was no escape from the automobile; they only grew more numerous and deadly.

    In 1902 given how rural this country was and how few autos there were this makes perfect sense to a fifty year old reading this. He was horse and buggy only. There were laws that anyone driving a car had to have someone walking in front to announce its presence.
