I don’t love green bean casserole, but it wouldn’t be a holiday meal if it was missing. I do LOVE all the different flavors and textures. Then I will sit back for a few minutes and then attack the desert table.
Glazed carrots, regular and garlic mashed potatoes, corn, and wild rice (and they are not the pencil leads most people get from the store either), but I never, ever had green bean casserole… must be something no one in my family ever liked. :-P
Many, Many years ago I worked in a downtown office, and one of my co-workers brought her homemade green bean casserole to our office Christmas potluck, and it was the best green bean casserole I had ever tried! Of course, she wouldn’t give out the recipe!
While my dad was alive, the Thanksgiving menu was set. The only variety allowed was adding to, not replacing anything. Same with who did what job/prepared what dish (especially when my sister and got to be 10 and 12 yrs old). That would have been around 1967. It stayed that way until he passed away in March of 2014. Then everything changed. We had KETO Thanksgivings, we had vegan thanksgiving – tofurkey is not to my liking – we had gluten free Thanksgiving. This year we said, forget it, we are going with what we LIKE, which is the traditional stuff my dad insisted upon! Yay! The only changes are – I am not doing the turkey this year. Mostly because my sister raised the turkey and has the facility to process the turkey. (I can do it, but just don’t have the space in an apt. – not sure the leasing company and neighbors would like it either). So we bring whatever my sister and her youngers kids don’t bring. I think her youngest (almost 30, I think) will be providing dessert. She is an awesome baker!
Why does it have to be either or? Go with all recipes, let everyone cook their favorites or new experiments. Makes great conversation/anecdotes for Thanksgivings to come.
That said, I am isolating from even a social distanced, very few (4) people, Thanksgiving this year. I work retail, people are crazy and I just don’t want even the suspicion of carrying anything to family.
Despite the fighting, the mice, Scratch, Louie drool, Nate eating too much, and Henry’s hairy legs. I think that Thanksgiving on the old “Revenge” will be a hoot and a half.

Green bean casserole is not something to fight over. It won’t make it to my table.

When it comes to the fruit cake, things are going to get very nasty.

As long as there’s a gravy boat, mounds of mashed potatoes, and cranberry/orange sauce!!!

Is green bean casserole the atonement part of the meal, where you assuage your guilt through suffering? Just wondering.

Always, always, always, always roast the turkey with the stuffing IN it. NEVER roast the stuffing separate.
If you fear a dry bird, BASTE, baste, and baste again. Stuffing IN the bird never dries it out.
If the stuffing is not in the bird, I want none of either.

Noooo! Stuffing cooked outside of the turkey always gets too dry!

Stuffing should be done inside the turkey. Any extra can be placed in a separate pan. The big question is how the stuffing should be made.
Burgundy2 about 4 years ago
Stuffing has to be IN the turkey. If it’s outside the turkey ( which is a fine way to use the stuff that won’t fit in the bird), it’s DRESSING.
