Gore never claimed he invented the Internet. He claimed that he was one of its supporters in the early days of its existence. His Congressional record supports him in this claim. It’s disappointing that you would choose to repeat this right wing myth-making.

Yep, he did say it. Because without his initiative, it wouldn’t have happened. Now can all the trolls go home, please?

Perhaps if Gore had been less self-serving and said he supported the expansion of the internet through his sponsoring of the 1991 High Performance Computing and Communication Act this wouldn’t be an issue. The internet began in approximately 1969, as Gore was finishing up his degree in government and six years before he was first elected to the House.

Say what you like about Al Gore…he has enough enough of a sense of humor about himself to be self-satirized as a character on Futurama and The Simpsons. That’s actually pretty classy.

Being an IT person from the era, and knowing several of the key people involved in “inventing” the Internet, Al Gore’s claims are pure self-agrandisement; even the watered down wording. Vint and Bob were being nice for a Democrat. Al Gore did provide useful support, but he never provided “intellectual leadership”. The Internet would have come along without his meagre support. It was the Universities and private companies that provided the true “intellectual leadership”. The government has provided funding for what they didn’t understand and legislation to mostly get in the way.
