    Of course 28 refers to the age of the comic strip. But turtles actually live long lives, so 28 wouldn’t be uncommon, while the average lifespan of a raccoon is only about 5 years in the wild.

    I have a friend who found a box turtle on her doorstep and took it to the vet—who said it was old enough to have been here when Mark Twain was. She took good care of it for 30 years till it finally died of old age.
