I think that four-fingered version is actually universally accepted among Trekkies.
I thought the one-fingered version was the universally understood one… ;-)
Nimoy based it upon seeing, when he wasn’t supposed to, A sign made by the four rabbis based upon the first letter of their name for their deity.
