The teacher’s comment is spot on according to many studies. And look at what happened even with online grade school. Almost as if the kids hadn’t been there for two years!
School year in the USA is about 180 days. Europe about 200. Japan 220 and breaks are spread out over the year so students don’t have a lot of downtime between years. And much of that break is independent studies of some sort. University is when most Japanese students get their longer breaks.
