Today she’d just do it with a smart phone rather than a 35mm or a digital. Better with a 35mm or digital.

Sometimes I miss the control I had with my 35mm. ’Let’s see, slow the shutter down 2 more so I can stop it down 2 and get the far background in focus ’cause I like that tree…"

There’s an old Charles Addams cartoon where a man at a zoo has been grabbed by a gorilla through the bars of its cage, and two amateur photographers are discussing what light setting to use to take a picture of it.I can see how someone would like all the control they had with the settings on the old cameras, but for those of us who just want to record a moment from time to time, and couldn’t care less about composition, a decent smart phone beats that hands down.

I could never give up all the control — but that’s a matter of camera features, not film or digital. Every digital camera I’ve had lets me set the shutter speed and aperture when I want to. And the white balance and ISO – the only way to set those with a film camera is by putting in different film!

My dad does this all the time. I can be falling or suffering yet he takes such a long while in taking one stupid photo!

Yeah, back in the day when you REALLY had to know what you were doing with a camera. (Unless you had a Polaroid…)

I couldn’t give away my old 35mm SLR. I have a Canon EOS now and love it— I can either fuss over the settings, or just set everything to auto for snapshots. And digital vs. film: I can take thousands of photos on one card, and video. and process it myself on the computer. And the SLR is essential: being nearsighted, with a smartphone I can either view the subject with my glasses on, or the camera’s LED with glasses off. Very awkward.

This is one of those strips that you can easily imagine was pretty much drawn and transcribed from a recent event in his life (it certainly is “out of character” for young kids to know or even care about the technical aspects of picture-taking): such as Mr Schulz posing with, say, a statue while out and about and Mrs Schulz trying his patience by trying to get the camera just right until finally he just walks away.
