Interesting thing about encyclopedias… If you read through a set from the late 1800s, you’d be amazed at the stuff people “knew” to be true… stuff which has since been proven to be complete bilge.
True enough. But on the whole, if you examined, say, a thousand randomly selected propositions from a respected encyclopedia of the day, a far larger proportion would be accurate than not. Certainly such a book would be a better source of information than folk knowledge as such. If one’s standard for a useful, reliable reference is one without error… well, that person is on a religious quest.
