For many years, you could find “inspirational” articles in the press (later, email forwards) about how some little kid had sent Santa a letter through the mail telling about the family’s disasters and how the post office employees in the dead letter office got together to give the kid’s family the best Christmas they’d ever had. You hear how Romeo and Juliet get letters in Italy by the dozen, and how the Bronte sisters are still getting mail.
We tried sending letters to Santa, etc as kids—they all came back. Does the dead letter office even exist, anymore?
I can see St. Nick now: Well, I’m not sure what to do for this kid… but I think I see the present for that soap opera writer whose request came in today.
