It took me decades to realise that the “popular” kids are not necessarily liked by their sycophants; they just know how to make themselves very, very unpleasant if the expected adulation is not forthcoming. That, or they have advantages the other kids want to use (pool, horses, large patio for parties etc.)
Well, I hate to mention a tragedy here, but Peter Robbins, the original voice of Charlie Brown in the TV specials of the 1960’s, and A Boy Named Charlie Brown, committed suicide at age 65. RIP, Mr. Robbins.
When I was a kid, I had a neighbor who specifically didn’t invite someone to her party to hurt their feelings. But I was tattletale and told her Mom what she was doing. She got in trouble and her mom said she couldn’t have her party if the other girl wasn’t invited. The neighbor girl didn’t speak to me for about a month, she was so angry at me for telling on her. A few years after high school I ran into her at a store and we talked. That incident came up an she said, “Wow, what a little **tch I was back then.”

Little girls can be mean to little boys ….. and for some it keeps on even when they are grown up .

I wouldn’t go to any party where they would invite me. (With apologies to Groucho Marx.)
