In Icelandic, the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper are called the Big Bear and the Little Bear. I think “dipper” is a more descirptive name, since they don’t look at all like bears.
The dippers are called astorisms, a recognizable pattern that’s part of a constellation. In summer, Scorpio and Sagittarius show asterisms of a stinger and a teapot.
“Dippers” used to be more commonly known when many of us used to share them to drink water. I believe they still exist, although more often we use “ladles” to dip liquids that we don’t drink from.

All constellations exist only in our human imaginations… some folks names just stuck more than others.

Time to find her an astronomy book so she’ll see you’re telling the truth.

Lucy is not the brightest star in the sky, lyrics notwithstanding.
