The new year actually used to be on March 25 for much of Europe during the Middle Ages, and Great Britain and its colonies didn’t shift to using January 1 until 1752, when they adopted the Gregorian Calendar. The fiscal year used by the British government for taxation could not be so easily adjusted, and so the British fiscal year still started on March 25, but because the shift to the Gregorian Calendar eliminated eleven days from the calendar, it starts eleven days later on April 6. This is also why tax season in many places influenced by the UK, including the US, begins in April.
