That’s a somewhat neglected part of ancient history, in what’s called the “intertestamental period”. Alexander the Great succeeded in conquering much of the known world, including ancient Israel, and after his death, his empire fragmented and parts of it were ruled by his descendants Ptolemy and Seleucus. Antiochus IV Epiphanes was one of the Seleucid emperors, and he tried to force the Jews to worship him and had statue of himself erected in the Temple in Jerusalem (the “abomination of desolation”) in 167 BC. This led to a revolt by the Jews who eventually succeeded in expelling their Hellenistic overlords and establishing an independent Jewish monarchy, the Hasmonean dynasty, which lasted just over a century, until in 37 BC Herod the Great overthrew them with the help of Rome.
The Books of the Maccabees that you can find in most Catholic bibles chronicle the period, and the Jewish Festival of Hanukkah celebrates the re-consecration of the Temple after the revolt.
