Lucy asks Charlie Brown, "What's that you're holding?"<BR><BR> Charlie Brown replies, "It's a pencil . . . It belongs to that little red-haired girl . . . I'm going to stand here until she walks by and then I'm going to tell her how I found it . . ."<BR><BR> Lucy says, "I hate to see you go to all that trouble Charlie Brown . . . Why don't I just give it to her?"<BR><BR> Lucy snatches the pencil and shouts, "Hey! Here's your stupid pencil!!"<BR><BR>

I think you may be missing Charlie’s point, Lucy-he wants to give Heather her pencil personally, as his way of showing her how much he cares for her.
