He thinks, "Here's the World War I Flying Ace putting on his scarf..."<BR><BR> He walks along and thinks, "Here's the World War I Flying Ace walking out onto the aerodrome...."<BR><BR> He questioningly reaches up and touches his head. He thinks, "My helmet!" He rushes along thinking, "I can't fly without my helmet!"<BR><BR> He looks under his bunk-bed and thinks in a panic, "Where is it? Where is it?"<BR><BR> He stands, shifting his eyes over his shoulder, and thinks, "I can hear the other pilots starting their engines..."<BR><BR> He runs along thinking, "What am I going to do?"<BR><BR> He pauses in mid-run and looks back at his dish.<BR><BR> He sits atop his doghouse with his dish on his head. He thinks, "This is so embarrassing..."<BR><BR>

Since those “helmets” were leather and meant to protect from the cold rather than injury, I doubt the dog dish will prove an effective substitute.
