Violet was never a good person. It did not bother me at all that Schultz finally wrote her out of the strip. But I have heard that she was based on someone he knew when he was Charlie Brown’s age.

Remember this 1967 Peanuts comic strip appeared on the cover of a rare late 1960’s Saalfield Peanuts Violet coloring book?

Violet (and Patty) were both kind of pencilling in their marriages to Charlie Brown in the early years. (Shermy and Charlie Brown both wanted Violet, for that matter.) Violet’s weapon was her tongue (you never see Violet slug Charlie Brown or Linus or Snoopy or anybody!), so in that sense she was kind of malicious. (She was also always bragging how her father was better than Charlie Brown’s father. I don’t remember her ever mentioning her mother, though.) Lucy’s main weapons were her fists, but she could keep up with her tongue. There’s a classic Lucy/Violet Sunday page where they’re insulting each other. Lucy wins because “Nobody can beat Lucy at in-fighting!”

A little closer, and they’d be taking Peanuts in a whole new direction.

Violet and Patty still both showed up in occasional cameos until well into the 90s. I think Patty last appeared in 1992 and Violet last showed up in 1995. I just assume that like the other kids who faded away, they were still always in the neighborhood but we just stopped following them around.

I’ve long agreed with what some are saying about Violet and Patty. They were far nastier to Charlie Brown than Lucy ever was. Lucy gave him hell, but she gave almost everybody hell because she’s just a crabapple in general. The other two had a more personally vindictive attitude toward ol’ Chuck, and they remind me much more of the kind of nastiness girls in real life are capable of when they feel the need to pick on someone.
