It may also be an intelligence test.

Swimming test. My question, do they even know how to swim in the first place?

Seems a lot of swimming for small young kids…

The camp swimming tests didn’t mandate a single standard like this. Instead, there were a bunch of different levels, which determined where you could swim and which boats you could be in.

A swimming pool at camp? I had a whole lake with a “float” at the end of the dock! I would say, requirements for the camp experience. And lots of mosquitoes, poison ivy, and getting lost in the woods, thrown in as a bonus.

Our daughters could easily swim the length of our pool long before they were in their teens.

    And frequently did, multiple times…

There’s a classic strip where Linus is bragging to Charlie Brown that he’s learned to swim: “I was able to swim six feet! Yessir, if I’m ever in a boat that sinks six feet from shore, I’ll be perfectly safe!”

I grew up at the beach. I can not remember a time when I did not know how to swim. I may have started swimming shortly after I started walking.

I consider swimming to be a basic survival skill. Everyone should at least know how to tread water.

As one who swam 100 yards butterfly once and just barely about 50 years ago, I’m predicting not one of those little girls could do twice across the pool using the butterfly stroke.

When a close friend of mine joined the Navy, I asked him why he would do that when he can’t swim?

He said to me he told the recruiting Sargent he was not a swimmer and the Sarge replied, “When your ship goes down, just sink to the bottom and run like hell for shore!”
