PP sees CB how he is, but he doesn’t want to see himself that way.She wants him to know that she accepts him how he is.Is she already in love with him?Or is she just someone who wants to be seen as good-natured because, maybe, her dad told her to be compassionate? However, saying nothing would have been wiser.
I think the reason she thinks she hurts him without knowing is because she has low self esteem herself. It was always so typical of Peppermint Patty to think she was being so noble to Charlie Brown when she was actually offending him. Either way, she always treated him much better than Lucy ever did.
This is Peppermint Patty, not Lucy. Peppermint Patty is blissfully honest and brutally unaware of how her honesty can affect those around her. Lucy, in her classic form, deliberately tries to hurt those around her.
Peppermint Patty, you’re forgetting about Snoopy… and if only CB would realize he needs to manage while Linus pitches, you wouldn’t have the need for such “compassion”. (In case you’re wondering, whenever Linus has pitched to substitute for CB, they’ve won.)

Is the truth always best in the end, even if it’s brutal?

PP has a pretty high opinion of herself, but no respect for others.

Is this where compassionate conservatism began?

Here’s the strip from 14th Nov 1969. The hint was pretty clear then.

On the other hand…her compassion had limits on 17th Sep 1969.
