My elementary teachers were kind enough to put our names on our desks for the first two or three weeks. After that, things got changed around but by that time we were comfortable in the classroom. I was lucky, my surname begins with C so I was always near the front—being badly nearsighted, it was nice to be where I could see without getting “special treatment” which in those days marked you down for special bullying in the schoolyard.
My favorite Family Circus cartoon had Billy coming home, dejected, with a printed page. “Boy, talk about homework! I have to color in all these circles!”
